Ann Mowat — C.SMA of the Month (Apr. 2020)
Ann Mowat, L.Ac., C.SMA
Ann Mowat, L.AC. is sports acupuncturist in Austin, Texas — certified in Sports Medicine Acupuncture® — and the owner of 512 Wellness Acupuncture.
“Austin is a competitive market for acupuncturists and alternative medicine practitioners. Completing the SMAC program helped me separate myself from the pack. The strong foundation in anatomy and Western diagnosis, combined with Chinese Medicine techniques taught in the program, provided exactly what I was seeking to get a clearer understanding as to the pathomechanism and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries.
The success I’m most proud of is being able to help a rower return to World Championship form after being injured during a training accident. Additionally, I’ve worked with a former MLB pitcher, several University of Texas athletes, sponsored a woman’s cycling team, was voted “Best Acupuncturist” in Austin Fit magazine five times, and I often partner with area doctors, orthopedic specialists, yoga and fitness studio owners.
I attribute this success directly to all the teachings provided by the SMAC program.
The real beauty of SMAC is in understanding how working with the functional mobility of the body can be applied to anyone in pain, not just athletes.
I had a 65 year-old female client who presented with knee pain. She had been diagnosed with arthritis by her doctor. During my assessment, I noticed significant redness, swelling and warmth to the touch proximal to the knee. I suspected a potential clot and referred her immediately for assessment, which confirmed my suspicion.
And just recently, a 30 year-old woman came in for treatment complaining of constant hip pain. She was “checking out” acupuncture, but shared she had no real hope for improvement as she had already seen a variety of practitioners for treatment. Upon assessment, her sacrum was laterally tilted with significant swelling over the sacral foramen on the same side as her pain. No other practitioner had treated her sacrum and after three treatments, the swelling and adhesions decreased as did the pain. Within weeks of her first session, she was back to all her workouts making great improvements in her training.
It’s stories like these that make me thankful for the SMAC program. I truly believe I would not have the ability to provide this level of care without it.”
