Lucy Yeo — C.SMA of the Month (Nov. 2020)

Lucy Yeo L.Ac., C.SMA

Lucy Yeo L.Ac., C.SMA completed the Sports Medicine Acupuncture Certification (SMAC) program in April of 2018, and practices in Asheville, NC.

“After completing the program and becoming certified in sports medicine acupuncture, I continue to be excited about SMAC and assisting subsequent classes both in San Diego and in New Jersey. This program has completely shaped the way that I practice. It is something that I believe so deeply in and know that it has given me the confidence to work on any patient ranging from an elite NFL athlete to the everyday active individual seeking help with musculoskeletal pain.

Given the woes of 2020, and missing opportunities to assist “live-gathering” SMAC class, I was so happy to see the resilience that Matt, Brian and the whole team showed by working tirelessly to provide a portion of the SMAC program virtually. Without any hesitation I was excited to attend the inaugural online webinar Module III: The Lower Extremity.

Of course, as Matt always says “the karma of seminars” landed a new patient on my schedule the following week with persistent knee pain and swelling following ACL and medial meniscus surgery a year ago. Knowing the SMA assessment and treatment material as a graduate of the SMAC program, I already had protocols to work with and felt confident in my approach with this patient. However, the most amazing thing about each year of SMA education that goes by, and why I think it’s so important to continue to study in the SMAC program, is that the student is always learning and growing with new and updated material. When treating any knee pain, the program has taught me to always consider the popliteus and VMO to restore balance of the knee joint. But, having just attended the virtual class, I learned a new motor point needle technique for the popliteus that I was able to use in my treatment with great success.

As someone who has been through the SMAC program in live classes and now participated as a virtual student, I can honestly say the virtual experience far exceeded my expectations. Matt and Brian have created a learning experience that delivers rich content along with a deeply interactive exchange between students and teachers that I didn’t realize was possible online. The online class is such a gift to come out of 2020 as I know it will allow this unparalleled material to be taught to so many more talented acupuncturists who would not have been able to attend otherwise. I look forward to the day when we can all meet together again, but in the meantime, I am so grateful this opportunity exists to keep my skills up.”
