I want to thank Matt Callison and Brian Lau for this wonderful, amazing system of medicine called Sports Medicine Acupuncture.

2020 has been one tough year for me, with the shut-down, then when school started back which is when my practice normally gets a big influx of patients, it has been very slow d/t the fact that many folks have had to over see their children with their online schooling and they are just too damn busy to receive any care for themselves.

Yet, I am getting more and more difficult cases, where the patient has tried everything – PT, Chiro, surgeries and haven’t gotten the relief they needed to live active lives. Then when I use what I have been taught and go step-by-step through their cases with assessment and treatments I’m getting positive RESULTS!! It keeps me inspired, motivated and wanting to keep going. Thank you guys. And thanks to my many SMAC Colleagues for answering ALL of my questions!!

What an amazing 4 days guys! I miss y’all doing this in person, but there were definite benefits to doing it online.

Yesterday I didn’t get a chance to send you guys an email, but one of the things that struck me was the slide “The Genius of TCM: Myofascial Sequences and the Jingjin”. Basically it was a holy sh*t! in awe of y’all moment! You talk about evolvement and always hungry for more refinement, more evolvement — this was it. I remember the early days of this — side discussions that got everybody geeked. And now, to see the organization of your thoughts all tied together so neatly, coordinating the myofascial sequences with all the channel divisions — y’all are UH.MAH.ZING! It blows my mind to see your guys genius brains at work.

And speaking of evolvement, so very cool to see the myofascial work evolve from Bill to Simone to this current version. Y’all are crazy awesome. You guys have really put together a fantastic comprehensive package. And like what you’ve done with the acupuncture portion, you’ve elevated to a more refined and target specific technique. Bravo, guys!

Lastly, just seeing/hearing Ian in there… I remember him from his early TA days. He’s always on it, super smart, and thoughtful – and so to see his evolvement into a confident, core part of your teaching team – an evolvement aspect of you and your program. It’s so impressive how you’ve established a culture of winning within the SMAC organization — the culture of generosity of time and energy, the freely sharing of knowledge, the continued thirst to be better, the humility of knowing there is always more to learn — this is what elevates your team and sets SMAC apart from the rest.

Congrats on an amazing pivot to a webinar format! Congrats on an incredible 4 days! Congrats on being the absolute best!

Y’all are the best. I am in awe and in gratitude to be able to partake of your teachings. Thank you so much for all the blood, sweat and tears. In gratitude, Vita Yee

SMAC Program Review by Gise Herrera | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COM

Medicine is always evolving and so does SMAC. This weekend we completed the first virtual classes and I am so happy to say they delivered! I was so anxious and overwhelmed with all the changes 2020 continues to bring upon us. I didn’t want to add one more thing on my plate by doing virtual classes especially because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to learn the same as in person. While virtual classes have their own strengths and weaknesses I am very happy to report I am beyond impressed by the amount of information they delivered and how well it was perceived. I can tell a lot of work and effort went into this because they make it look easy and cohesive.

I can’t say this enough, YOU GUYS ROCK! I feel very fortunate to have you in our profession because you elevate our standards time after time. The passion you put into teaching is very impressive, and it SHOWS! Keep up the great work. I am very grateful to everyone involved into making this happen. My head is still spinning a little (may be a lot) from all of the information. I am still processing it. I am so glad we will be able to go back at the recording to review and be able to absorb more info later on.

I can’t wait to start incorporating the things I learned into my treatments.

I am currently enrolled in the 2019-2020 SMAC Program and I want to share with everyone that the SMAC program is extraordinary. It is hands down the single best professional training investment I’ve ever made. What an honor it is to learn from Matt and his faculty.  Matt’s humility and good nature is refreshing. The way the information is presented brings out the best in the students; the instructors build us up and their positive encouragement keeps us going in the midst of a legitimately rigorous training program. Sports Medicine Acupuncture is creating a paradigm shift not just in the acupuncture and sports medicine professions but in the health and wellness field in general. This stuff is legendary.

SMAC Program Review by Catherine Cameron | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COM

Matt Callison’s sport acupuncture courses changed my practice in a big way.  On the way through Seattle, my friend Laura said, we should go to a seminar with this guy, Matt.  He does incredible things.

Like, he needles under the shoulder blade.  She made the shocked face.  She and I had been on many TCM adventures, so I said hell yes.  That was the beginning.

I had a bad ankle that was quite resistant to getting well and I volunteered to be the model for a demonstration.  Matt had quiet sure hands and released something “ropey” on my lateral calf.  I thought my leg was going to fly off.  That leg never bothered me again.  I chronically sprained that ankle since I was a kid.  Never sprained it again in 20 years.

I signed up for every course I could get myself to over the next couple of years and learned more about anatomy, physiology and muscle testing than I even knew existed.  Since then I have become the GoTo Lady for all ankle injuries.  Some of my patients don’t know I do anything else.  Ankle  injury= Catherine period.   One guy had a sore shoulder and I asked if he’d like a hand with that too.  He said,” I thought you just did ankles.”  I am now a very good manual therapist and can unlock much more than ankles.  Even decades old injuries that are off the charts for complexity can be accessed and repaired.

What I really enjoy about SMA is that it is deeply rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and didn’t turn me into a western soft tissue guy.  The idea that Spleen and Stomach Channels could rob Kidney and Bladder Channels just like in Five Element Theory, for instance, just woke me up and set my feet on a new and exciting adventure. Thanks to Sports Medicine Acupuncture and to Matt Callison.

Jonathan Olcott, L.Ac.

This is the education I wish I had in acupuncture school, hands-on classes with expert instruction, from teachers who communicate effectively to convey knowledge. From the first class I experienced better patient outcomes, greater awareness/understanding of anatomy, and more confidence treating my patients.

Elena Galperin, L.Ac.

I get so pumped during the Sports Medicine Acupuncture seminars! I’ve signed up for the entire program in June and currently attending the second Module – Lower Back and Hip. My confidence in this medicine is growing even more and I’m very excited to be able to help so many people with pain issues that are stubborn or seem impossible to get rid of. I highly recommend this program to my fellow Acupuncture practitioners and encourage them to attend Matt Callison’s seminars.

Lucy Yeo

The absolute best education you can receive in Sports Medicine Acupuncture!

Geno Diveley, L.Ac., DACM

I like that TCM is kept in this program. It’s genius! I’ve read information on other programs and they seem to just keep the TCM out . That’s sad. I feel this is a whole approach , there are no gaps between modern scientific research and the TCM model.

Suzi Stoffel, L.Ac.

I am so grateful for the depth of knowledge and detail on how to treat pain and trauma using anatomy and TCM…and the heart and soul through which it is taught and utilized. Thank you Matt, Brian, Ian, Karen, Lilly, Niels, Everyone

Jennifer Mason, L.Ac.

Matt is the best acupuncture teacher I have ever had. These classes changed my practice and made me feel that I could treat almost anything that came into my clinic. So much hands-on practice including clinical assessments needling. The assistants are kind and helpful. Plus he provides chocolate!

Steve Olsen

I’m currently travelling from New Zealand to do the SMAC programme. I’d highly recommend it. It’s the best programme of it’s type in the world that I’m aware of. You’re taught really good practical information and extremely effective treatments.

Kelley Mondesiré

I am 3/4 towards completing this program and I can tell you this: the level of successful treatments I’ve been giving patients since embarking on this journey has increased by at least 50%, I now speak the same ‘language’ with orthopedic surgeons, pain specialists and physical therapists which has now allowed me an open door to more referrals from them. I’m really looking forward to completing the program for full certification. I have been studying with Matt for approximately 15 years now and taking ‘the plunge’ to commit to the entire coursework has made such a difference for my approach to healing. I cannot thank Matt enough, nor can I say enough about this program!

Sean Davis, L.Ac., C.SMA, C.KTP

My entire practice is built around this treatment style and approach. I have so many passionate 5 star reviews on my Yelp page and every one of them is a tribute to the knowledge and hands on experience I gained directly through Matt’s program and assisting at his clinic.

Uzi Chen, L.Ac., C.SMA

I’m currently taking the Sports Medicine Acupuncture certification program (SMAC) under Matt Callison. I truly enjoy it. I have just completed three out of the four modules. It is an extremely interesting program. It gives you great edge as an acupuncturist practitioner. It teaches you a systematic approach for being able to accurately assess and treat a muskuloskeletal pain condition, which is what I’m seeing daily in my practice. This program is everything I was looking to get in school and didn’t. I highly recommend it, especially for those who like to stay grounded in anatomy and orthopedic evaluation. It’s extremely useful especially when communicating with medical doctors, physical therapists and chiropractors. Thank you Matt, Brian, Ian and all the wonderful assistants who make this program a successful and wonderful learning experience. Can’t wait to implement in clinic everything I learned.

Dean Campbell, MAcOM, L.Ac.

For the very best Sports/Orthopedic acupuncture training go with Sports Medicine Acupuncture. Their instructors have tremendous experience and are truly committed to their students success with this material.

Jackie Parra L.Ac., C.SMA

Jackie Parra, L.Ac., C.SMA — Sports Medicine Acupuncturist in Denver, Colorado | SportsMedicineAcupuncture.comSports Medicine Acupuncture Certification (SMAC) program, was the best option I found for treating orthopedic and sports injuries that surpassed my expectations of continuing education.

I was pleased that the program placed a large emphasis on TCM in assessment and treatment of meridians, sinew channels, traditional acupuncture points even zang-fu diagnosis was discussed as it ties in with musculoskeletal injuries. This information has been integrated beautifully with  western based anatomy and physiology.  A true blend of TCM and Sports Medicine.

I especially enjoyed the in-depth training on classically-based needle techniques that has evolved into innovative treatment styles that fit today’s patient. I appreciated the allowance of time to practice all of the techniques and my questions were answered in a comfortable environment.

Since starting and now graduating from the SMAC program, I have found every treatment I apply is incorporating the diagnoses, assessments and treatments I have learned from this training. I have been able to build my practice, my patient load has tripled! I am treating injuries in regular patients, active people and also professional athletes which was my goal in coming into the program. I applaud this program! Thank you!

I just finished my third SMAC module, and I was once again incredibly impressed with the dedication of Matt and the entire teaching team. Although the students are always exhausted by the end of the day, we get to go home and relax every night. Matt and the teaching team, on the other hand, arrive early and stay late and always have time to answer our questions and spend some extra time helping us with anything we need. Matt clearly cares that we truly learn the material and understand how to apply in clinic what we learn in the classroom. All of the instructors are extremely knowledgable and patient; they are the linchpins of SMAC. I highly recommend this program to anyone interested in sports medicine.

Shelly Kocan, L.Ac.

AcuSport Education Reviews — Shelly Kocan, L.Ac. | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COMThe SMAC courses are taught by a team of fantastic teachers that demonstrate diligence, compassion and a drive for furthering the medicine in a way that is true to anatomical structure and function, while drawing from the brilliance of traditional Chinese medicine.

I can’t recommend these classes enough. It’s been a chance to study with dedicated teachers and engaged classmates while learning a system of assessment and treatment that is clinically applicable, effective, cutting edge, and so much fun!

If you want all the science without losing the magic, these courses are for you.

Greg Lewerenz L.Ac., C.SMA

AcuSport Education Reviews — Greg Lewerenz, L.Ac., C.SMA | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COMThis is long overdue, but I wanted to take a moment to thank you for all of your instruction over the past year. The material you have compiled has focused the way I practice in a way I didn’t think possible. Through your SMAC program I have acquired the tools to work in a way that produces clear results – results both me and my patients can see. I’ve always enjoyed practicing acupuncture and Chinese medicine but your instruction has elevated my interest to a whole new level.

I’m envious of all of the new practitioners starting your program tomorrow – they’re in for an intense and fruitful, rewarding year!

No secret that I applaud this program!

Hege Fagerlund L.Ac., C.SMA

I just wanted to say thank you for the SMAC program.

Thank you for a fantastic education that combined elements of TCM with western medicine so elegantly. I have learned so much about the human body and how the musculoskeletal system functions. You have inspired my curiosity and to help me understand and gain confidence in muscle function as well as when to apply orthopedic tests in order to identify an injury. This program has also made me a much better acupuncturist with all of the different needle techniques we have learned and practiced during this last year.

It has been a ten month adventure with lots of hard work. Ten months with frustration and joy, ten months with friendship and support, ten months with curiosity and feeling of wanting to learn more. Thank you for your fantastic, inspiring and motivating program, and for sharing all of your knowledge. The travel from Oslo, Norway was well worth it.

Charlie Roach L.Ac., C.SMA

AcuSport Education Reviews — Charlie Roach, L.Ac., C.SMA | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COMThe SMAC program has reinvigorated my practice. The knowledge I’ve gained in the program has given me new tools to diagnose and treat my clients, and the SMAC techniques are extraordinarily effective. Word of my effectiveness is spreading, and my practice has become busier than ever. I have been offered a position as team acupuncturist with a professional cycling team for multi-day stage races, am the team acupuncturist for a local climbing gym, and treat professional cyclists, including two Olympians, top-ranked ultra marathon runners, UFC fighters, and many other athletes, both amateur and professional.

Matt Callison and his staff are highly knowledgeable and teach the information in an easy to follow format. If you are serious about assessing and treating sports and work related injuries, no program will take your further than SMAC!

Keri Jones L.Ac., C.SMA

AcuSport Education Reviews — Keri Jones, L.Ac., C.SMA | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COMWhen I began the SMAC program, I had been licensed for less than a year and I was barely seeing 10 patients per week. Once I began incorporating what I learned from this program into my practice, I almost instantly doubled my practice, and now that I am 3/4 of the way through the program, I am seeing 25-30 patients a week.

My patients have been reporting significant improvement with their first treatment, and the results last. I also feel much more confident in my understanding of the musculoskeletal system and diagnosis. I have even had a patient tell me that I nailed her diagnosis and treatment plan before her physical therapist did! Thank you!

Kevin Menard L.Ac., C.SMA

Sports Medicine Acupuncturist Kevin Menard, L.Ac., C.SMA, M/S | SportsMedicineAcupuncture.comIn gratitude, I have been true believer and advocate for the Sports Medicine Acupuncture Certification program created by Matt Callison since my first introduction when it was being taught at NESA in Boston in 2012. SMAC was the missing, yet essential, piece that helped to elevate my game in properly assessing, diagnosing, and treating effectively simple to complex musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. SMAC also gave me the proper language to communicate effectively with fellow practitioners in the more ‘western’ medicine, including chiropractors, physical therapists, and rehabilitative trainers, which allowed me to create a network of like-minded professionals where our goal is to collectively and integratively getting our patients back in the game.

Additionally, in the early days of SMAC, where I needed lots of great “sports injuries” to practice on, I worked with the local sports teams pro-bono, including the East Hampton Men’s soccer team and the Montauk Sharks rugby team. Not only were the guys super appreciative, but I was able to hone in my SMAC skill set and it helped to create great ‘street cred’ for me being recognized as one of the top practitioners on the east end, which I am in immense debt and appreciation to Matt, Brian and the faculty of SMAC. It was also a privilege to assist Matt in a few SMAC Modules over the years in New York, Chicago, and San Diego, and watching the program to continually evolve and get better.

Meghan Cowens de Sturdze, L.Ac.

As an acupuncturist who works with athletes, from the professional to the weekend warrior, I have found that this course is the perfect synthesis of western and eastern thinking. It is the perfect complement to the traditional Chinese Medicine way of treating the whole person.

Dennis Yang, L.Ac., M.Eng.

AcuSport Education Reviews — Dennis Yang, L.Ac., M.Eng. | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COMUnlike many acupuncture modalities that give you recipes of acupuncture points for various pathologies without providing adequate reasoning, SMAC gives you a framework for assessment and treatment for orthopedic pathologies based on anatomy and biomechanics. By the end of the program, I felt confident enough to form a sound assessment and make a treatment plan for orthopedic issues that I have not encountered before with this framework; it is a platform for logical thinking. I also appreciated that Matt did not simply cover the material, but cared to really teach the material. He has an unusual ability to tell when the whole class “got it.” I especially enjoyed when Matt shared how he made new discoveries, such as better orthopedic tests, safer needling techniques, or different ways of using the channel theory. He thinks about things.

Tim Eng L.Ac., C.SMA

AcuSport Education Reviews — Tim Eng, L.Ac., C.SMA | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COMAfter some initial success in providing treatments for a veteran based on my Sports Medicine Acupuncture® Certification (SMAC) program knowledge, I recently provided some treatments to several former soldiers. The success of the treatments astounded me. These guys had experienced some horrific events based on encounters with improvised explosive devices with injuries ranging from debilitating back pain to the inability to grip a coffee cup to excruciating foot pain. With the knowledge that I gained in the SMAC program, I was able to find the source of the pain using orthopedic exams and manual muscle testing and then provide conservative solutions including the acupuncture needle techniques, channel correspondences and corrective exercises that I learned where surgery or opiate-based pharmaceuticals were the only offered alternatives.

Eric Raymond Buckley L.Ac., C.SMA

AcuSport Education Reviews — Eric Raymond Buckley, L.Ac., C.SMA | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COMWhen I graduated acupuncture school, I had very good foundational skills that were ready to be challenged by the real world of clinical practice. From all of the acupuncture that I had learned, I had enjoyed orthopedic style acupuncture treatments the most, but because it was a only small portion of my education, I found my treatments lacking in focus and direction.

Then I found the Sports Medicine Acupuncture Certification program. The anatomical focus of structural diagnostics and specific needle techniques that this program teaches allows me to integrate into Western medical clinical settings with solid communication skills, clinical effectiveness and grounded confidence. Since taking the program, my accomplishments include becoming credentialed and employed within a hospital to do inpatient treatments, creating an acupuncture portion of a hospital-based physical, occupational and speech therapy program, and employment with an orthopedic physician’s outpatient pain management group. I have Matt Callison and the other superior teachers he works with directly to thank!

Thank you from my heart.

Marshall De Couto, L.Ac.

AcuSport Education Reviews — Marshall De Couto, L.Ac. | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COMMatt Callison is passionate about his work and his art and this passion is palpable in each and every class that he taught in the SMAC program.

He is not content with his students just showing up and taking notes. He stays engaged with his teaching by being sure that we, the students, are engaged with the information that is being presented. When necessary, he will pause and even backtrack if he feels that he has left anyone behind. Matt is, by far, the most dynamic teacher that I have ever had the privilege to study with.

He is caring and patient with his students but will also challenge you to think it out so that you understand the material rather than just memorize it. He does not let his abundance of talent and knowledge distance himself from even the very beginner in his program. He generously gives us every morsel of what he knows and what his current thoughts are about a subject but at the same time, “teaches us to fish” so that we can take this information and use it as an effective approach in our clinical practice.

Matt Callison is the epitome of how modern acupuncture should be taught!

Laura Shahinian Kara L.Ac., C.SMA

AcuSport Education Reviews — Laura Shahinian Kara M.S. L.Ac. | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COMI just wanted to say thank you so much for creating such a great program. My practice has nearly doubled since I’ve been applying SMAC to my practice and after taking the final, I feel like I now have the confidence in the orthopedic examination process which has been giving my patients a lot more confidence in me. Today, someone thanked me for explaining what the MRI of their shoulder report meant in layman’s terms. The fact that I was able to do that, was due to your class!

Thank you. I hope you come back to the East Coast sometime to teach again!

In gratitude, Laura

Xin Xia L.Ac., C.SMA

AcuSport Education Reviews — Xin Xia, L.Ac., C.SMA | SPORTSMEDICINEACUPUNCTURE.COMI would like to express my deepest respect to what you have done. Very rarely had I seen a combination of deep knowledge in anatomy with high level of understanding of TCM channel and meridian theories and practice. It is amazing what you have linked together in these 2 very different worlds. I do wish more and more Chinese practitioners will be aware of what you have done. I feel very lucky that from tons of CEU courses I chose this one series just out of pure instinct. ?

The course helped me the most in getting much more detailed and precise assessment. Also provided a brand new direction of thinking when seeing other treatment modalities either work wonders or not work at all, especially the ones that use only remote points and often demand patient active movement, such as Tung’s acupuncture and Dr. Tan’s.

Thank you again, Xin
