Course Description

The low back and hip share muscle attachment sites, meridian topography and muscle groups innervated by the lumbar and sacral spine. Within this context, one may see that hip pain actually originates in the lumbar spine and injury to the low back is often accompanied by symptoms in the hip. Rather than viewing the low back and hip as distinct, it is of great benefit to treatment outcomes to view the low back and hip complex as one unit. For example, hip pain presenting as local Qi and Blood Stagnation (Qi Zhu Xue Yu) or Wind-Cold-Damp Obstruction (Feng Han Shi Bi) often stems from the lumbar spine. Conversely, an imbalance of the musculature acting on the hip can lead to low back pain.

In this workshop, using the perspective of the low back and hip complex as one unit, we will examine injuries from a TCM and Western perspective. The mechanical “how and why” specific injuries occur will be reviewed using orthopedic physical evaluations and manual muscle testing to assess the integrity of the musculoskeletal system. Treatment strategies using specific needle techniques to the involved motor and acupuncture points will be demonstrated. Point prescriptions along with rehabilitative exercises to balance the somatic system will be shared.
